She founded and was the first Editor-in-Chief of Clean Air &#8211; International Journal on Environmental Combustion Technologies (Gordon and Breach Publishers \\\/ Taylor &amp; Francis). She has coordinated more than 20 European R&amp;D consortia and chaired several international panels. She has been national delegate for several European programmes.<br>She is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the World Academy of Art and Science, the Academia Europaea, the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, the Royal Academy of Engineers of Spain and a founder of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering. She was National Vice-President of the Ordem dos Engenheiros.<br>She was a member of the Board of Directors and President of the IST Scientific Council, a member of the National Education Council and the National Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development. She was Minister of Science and Higher Education and Minister of Science, Innovation and Higher Education in the XV and XVI Constitutional Governments and is Minister of Environment and Energy since April 2024. She was a Member of the European Parliament (2009-2014) (Rapporteur for the Horizon 2020 program) and (2019-2024) (Rapporteur for the transformation of the European electricity market). She was Principal Advisor to the President of the European Commission on Science, Higher Education, Innovation, Research, Energy, Environment and Climate Change (2006-2009), Advisor to the Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation (2014-2015) and Principal Advisor to the Bureau of European Policy Advisors.<br>He has received distinctions and awards including: International Union of Materials Research Societies Global Leadership and Service Award, Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo Award, CIRCE Award (University of Zaragoza), Femina Prize of Honor, and has twice won the European Parliament Prize in the categories of Future of the EU and Innovation, and Research and Innovation.
