trillions of microorganisms ranging from bacteria, archaea, fungi, viruses and protozoa, collectively known as the microbiota. The microbiome refers to all the genomes of the communities of microorganisms that coexist in the human ecosystem. The intricate interaction between these microorganisms has a huge impact on the development, health and overall well-being of the individual. Co-evolution over generations between the microbiota and its host results in the establishment of host\/host interactions that beneficially or adversely affect metabolic functions and the immune system. Various factors, including genetics, the environment and age, influence the composition of the microbiota\/microbiome throughout the host's life. The study of the human microbiome is particularly important given its potential relationship with various human diseases. Such practices involve financial costs that are justified because science constitutes, through the discoveries it generates, a global public good of which we are all potential beneficiaries and which society must audit in an exercise of true scientific citizenship.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 16.0016px;\">In fulfilment of its mission, the Instituto de Altos Estudos da Academia das Portugal como no mundo onde fez valer a sua influ\u00eancia -, \u00e9 antes de mais uma manifesta\u00e7\u00e3o de grande proje\u00e7\u00e3o cenogr\u00e1fica. Este Ciclo pretende mostrar, mais uma vez, como se processou a sua rela\u00e7\u00e3o viva com a arquitetura (religiosa e civil), atrav\u00e9s de efeitos decorativos integrais, sempre sugestivos e quase sempre diversificados.<br \/>Trata-se de uma linguagem art\u00edstica cuja proje\u00e7\u00e3o na viv\u00eancia quotidiana se tornou, desde o s\u00e9culo XV at\u00e9 aos nossos dias, de grande impacto visual e com for\u00e7a caracterizadora da constru\u00e7\u00e3o, fosse ela erudita ou vern\u00e1cula. Podemos avaliar esse efeito como um verdadeiro \u00abcontentor de mem\u00f3rias e afetos acumulados\u00bb, como diz a historiadora de arte brasileira Dora Alc\u00e2ntara, grande estudiosa da azulejaria luso-brasileira, a qual v\u00ea na cria\u00e7\u00e3o azulejar \u00abuma sinaliza\u00e7\u00e3o viva das nossas mais profundas ra\u00edzes identit\u00e1rias\u00bb.<br \/>Embora fosse durante muito tempo considerada uma \u00abarte menor\u00bb, de efeito exclusivamente decorativo, a verdade \u00e9 que a linguagem do azulejo empregou muitas vezes os melhores artistas, os que tinham maior forma\u00e7\u00e3o erudita (caso de Ant\u00f3nio de Oliveira Bernardes, um genial pintor de \u00f3leo e fresco que, na viragem do s\u00e9culo XVII para o XVIII, se dedicou sobretudo \u00e0 azulejaria e nos legou obras absolutamente prodigiosas).<br \/>Passada a fase em que esta manifesta\u00e7\u00e3o art\u00edstica esteve menorizada face \u00e0s ditas \u00abartes maiores\u00bb, os estudos de refer\u00eancia de Jos\u00e9 Queir\u00f3s, de Verg\u00edlio Correia, de Reynaldo dos Santos e, sobretudo, de Jo\u00e3o Miguel dos Santos Sim\u00f5es, no s\u00e9culo passado, muito contribu\u00edram para o seu definitivo reconhecimento.<br \/>Sim, a arte cer\u00e2mica, de simples mat\u00e9ria fr\u00e1gil pintada e cozida, tem sempre sabedoria e engenho para se multiplicar em efeitos visuais diversificados e que assumem fort\u00edssimas concatena\u00e7\u00f5es est\u00e9ticas cheias de mem\u00f3rias e afetos. Esta declara\u00e7\u00e3o da ONU, composta por 30 artigos, representa um ideal comum a atingir por todos os povos e na\u00e7\u00f5es a fim de que todos os indiv\u00edduos e todos os \u00f3rg\u00e3os da sociedade, tendo-a constantemente no esp\u00edrito, se esforcem, pelo ensino e pela educa\u00e7\u00e3o, por desenvolver o respeito desses direitos e liberdades e por promover, por medidas progressivas de ordem nacional e internacional, o seu reconhecimento e a sua aplica\u00e7\u00e3o universais e efetivos, tanto entre as popula\u00e7\u00f5es dos pr\u00f3prios Estados-membros, como entre as dos territ\u00f3rios colocados sob a sua jurisdi\u00e7\u00e3o.<br \/>Decorridos 75 anos ap\u00f3s a publica\u00e7\u00e3o da Declara\u00e7\u00e3o Universal dos Direitos Humanos, o objetivo deste Ciclo de confer\u00eancias sobre Diversidade Cultural, desenvolvimento e direitos humanos consiste em promover uma reflex\u00e3o ampla e abrangente sobre o tema dos direitos humanos. Originally, there would have been only one system of acoustic communication (Rousseau), which only later split into music and articulate language. Bringing the two together again and again, as if in the desire to recover this lost unity, has been a common feature of all cultures since time immemorial. It is impossible not to find the tree in works ranging from literature to the arts, where it has been a source of particular inspiration. It is impossible to run without putting one\u00b4s feet on the ground. Likewise, it is impossible to develop new and reliable technologies without the knowledge derived from basic sciences, including the basic principles underlying the different technologies. However, the universal access to the discoveries made by basic sciences, to new and promising technologies and to the desired progress towards sustainable development, equity and well-being, is far from being achieved.<\/p><p>Considering the need to emphasize the role of basic sciences in technology development and it\u2019s seminal contribution to human development and well-being, the Institute of High Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon will address the impact of the DNA double helix elucidation, one of the greatest scientific discoveries honoured by the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962.
