Presentation

The Historical Archive of the Academy of Sciences has grown along with the institution itself, constantly enriching itself, on the one hand, with its daily activity and, on the other, with the activity carried out by its members since its foundation in 1779.

This gave rise to its two main series: one, known as the Secretary's Books, in which, in addition to the day-to-day management of the institution, the minutes of meetings or correspondence from members or official organizations stand out; and the other, made up of the Academic Files, in which all the acts that relate to each academic's relationship with the Academy of Sciences are collected.

The contribution of the fund of one of the oldest scientific institutions still in operation is essential to the knowledge of Portuguese scientific history, from the more experimental and natural areas such as Physics, Chemistry or Botany to the humanistic ones such as Literature or History.
