Institute of Lexicology and Lexicography of the Portuguese Language

The Institute of Lexicology and Lexicography of the Portuguese Language (ILLLP) aims to cultivate, defend and promote the Portuguese language, contributing to its study and dissemination. It is dedicated to the development of reference Portuguese academic lexical resources, within the scope of the mission of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon (ACL) as a "consultative body for the sovereign bodies of the Portuguese State in linguistic matters" (art. 5 of Decree-Law no. 18/2022, of January 19th). It was created in the 1980s and was first mentioned in legal texts in 1987 (Decree- Law no. 390/87, of December 31st).

he ILLLP is committed to producing and constantly updating the Dictionary of the Portuguese Language and the Orthographic Vocabulary of the Portuguese Language, as well as promoting the publication of specialized works, such as the Earth Sciences Thesauruscollection. These projects follow on from the aims behind the founding of the ACL, which included the creation of a monolingual dictionary to cultivate and preserve the Portuguese language.

The ILLLP is responsible for:

• preparing lexicographic reference works;

• issuing academic advice on linguistic issues;

• establishing synergies with research centers and other scientific and cultural entities in the Portuguese-speaking world;

• organizing scientific and academic meetings;

• creating working groups;

• liaising with other similar bodies.
