Upon graduation won the João Farinha Prize, 1973. Research student at the Institute of Physics and Mathematics (Lisbon) 1972/76. Got his PhD in Algebra, in 1980. He received the Householder Prize (ex-æquo with Peter van Dooren), in Oxford 1981, for best theses in Linear Algebra and Numerical Linear Algebra, from
1976 to 1980.
He was a professor and researcher for around five decades, mainly at the University of Coimbra. He was a visiting professor and researcher at Maryland University, Institute for Physical Science and Technology (1982/83), and at the University of Ghent (1991 and 1997). He retired in 2010 and has been an
invited full-professor at the UC ever since.
His doctoral thesis, introducing the interlacing relations for invariant factors, opened up lines of research in algebra and linear control theory. His work on von Neumann norms resolved questions that had been pending for a long time. A 40 year old joint paper on completion of Hermitian operators is still frequently used in applied research in optimization and quadratic programming.
He was a member (sometimes coordinator) of several research projects, notably the Group of Algebra (currently Algebra and Combinatorics) of the CMUC, which he helped to found (1978) and coordinated from 1987 to 1993. He was a member of the monitoring committees of three FCT research centres. He wrote opinions on research projects and books for INIC, JNICT and NSF/USA and FCG.
Devoted great effort to the dissemination and teaching of mathematics at all levels of education. He was a member of many committees for the coordination, restructuring or creation of undergraduate courses at the universities of Coimbra and Aveiro. He was a co-founder of the Delfos Project in 2001, a school dedicated to young students with an exceptional aptitude in Mathematics.

Born in 1946, he got undergraduate and PhD degrees from the University of Coimbra.
