He attended Queen Mary College at the University of London and, in 1972, carried out a doctoral thesis on radiation and transmissions entitled \u201cTheory and Design of Dielectric Cone Antennas\u201d, obtaining a PhD in Engineering Sciences in 1973.<br>With a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1978 and a Full Professor at IST between 1979 and 2003, Carlos Salema has carried out research in the field of electromagnetic radiation &#8211; in particular microwaves and Hertzian beams in their various applications to communication &#8211; which he has presented in articles, conferences and various works, including \u201cHertzian Beams\u201d (1998). In 2002, he was awarded the title of Doctor Emeritus by the Technical University of Lisbon. Since 2003 he has been an Invited Full Professor and Member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Engineering of the Portuguese Catholic University.<br>He was President of JNICT (1989-1992), and at the time was in charge of the CIENCIA and STRIDE programs. He was also President of the Telecommunications Institute, President of the Electrotechnical Engineering College of the Order of Engineers, President of the Executive Board of the Foundation for National Scientific Computation, a member of the General Council of the University of Beira Interior, and a member of the Portuguese section, created in 2005, of the Education Society Chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.<br>He was a national delegate for the EU programs RACE, DRIVE, DELTA and AIM and an evaluator for the Human Capital and Mobility programs, among others, and was part of the European teams evaluating the Tunisian and Greek scientific systems. A member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, he has been president of the Class of Sciences since 2016, having presided over the Academy of Sciences for the 2019-2021 triennium.
