Manuel Alegre de Melo Duarte, poet, novelist, columnist, and civic activist. He lived in Portugal until adulthood and later went into exile, first in Paris and then in Algiers, returning in 1974.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His poetry and civic engagement are inseparable, both before and after 25 April 1974. Pra\u00e7a da Can\u00e7\u00e3o<\/em> (1965) and O Canto e as Armas<\/em> (1967) marked the beginning of a long poetic career, consistently linked to his civic and political ideals and resistance to dictatorship\u2014a career that began in 1965 and continues to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Among his numerous works, in addition to these two, his poetry includes Um Barco para \u00cdtaca<\/em> (1971), Babil\u00f3nia<\/em> (1983), Chegar Aqui<\/em> (1984), Com que Pena \u2013 Vinte Poemas para Cam\u00f5es<\/em> (1992), and Livro do Portugu\u00eas Errante<\/em> (2001), among more than twenty other titles. His literary contributions also extend to seven works of fiction, including Rafael<\/em> (2003), Alma<\/em> (1995), and Jornada de \u00c1frica<\/em> (1989), as well as three children’s books and various essays, chronicles, and memoirs, the latest being Mem\u00f3rias Minhas<\/em> (2024).<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has received multiple national and international honours, including the Ordem da Liberdade<\/em> and the Ordem de Cam\u00f5es<\/em>, as well as numerous literary awards, such as the Pr\u00e9mio Cam\u00f5es<\/em> (2017), the Pr\u00e9mio Vida Liter\u00e1ria<\/em> (2016), the Pr\u00e9mio Pessoa<\/em> (1999), and the Pr\u00e9mio D.
