I was born in Porto, where I finished high-school. I studied at the Universities of Porto and Coimbra, graduating in Theoretical Physics at the University of Coimbra in 1981. I pursued studies in Theoretical Physics and finished my Master in Coimbra in 1984 and my PhD in 1990 at the Niels Bohr Institute, in Copenhagen, Denmark. I applied (and was granted) Post-Doc positions at the Fritz-Haber Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in Berlin, at the Physics Department of the University of Milan, Italy, and (now as a Post-Doc) again at the Niels Bohr Institute, in Copenhagen. After returning to Coimbra in 1992, I did my Habilitation at the University of \u00c9vora (Portugal) in 1998, and in 2000 I won a position as Associate Professor of Physics at the Physics Department of the University of Lisbon, where I taught Physics until 2009. In 2009, I won a position as Full Professor at the Mathematics and Applications Department of the University of Minho. Along the way I visited many places in Portugal and abroad (Niels Bohr Institute, U. California-Irvine, Princeton, Mayo Clinic, Harvard, and many others) and had the privilege to establish collaborations with (and become a friend of) many people (including scientists) around the world, with whom I continue to learn continuously. My research interests span a variety of topics, from Many-Body Physics (and Quantum Computing) to the Mathematical description of Evolutionary Processes, such as the Ecology of Cancer, the Evolution of Cooperation, Urban & Social Planning and Evolution, Quantitative Social & Political Science and Network Science.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
