Served as 2nd Assistant at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Coimbra (1964\u20131972), a position he held until completing his PhD, during which time he undertook service commissions for the establishment of the University of Louren\u00e7o Marques, completed military service, and pursued and obtained his PhD at the University of Liverpool. Appointed Professor Agregado at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (1975), Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Coimbra from 1981 to 2009, and since 2009, Emeritus Full Professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Collaborated in the installation of Instituto Polit\u00e9cnico da Covilh\u00e3, Universidade da Beira Interior (Covilh\u00e3), Escola Superior Agr\u00e1ria de Coimbra, and Universidade Cat\u00f3lica Portuguesa (Polo Figueira da Foz) as Councils member, lecturing, and supervising the qualification of own staff. President of the Board of Directors and of the Scientific Committee of the Chemistry Department of FCTUC for over 12 years; Coordinator of the Chemistry Research Center for over 6 years. Founder, President and Chief Scientific Officer of CHYMIOTECHNON, an ID scientific association designed as bridge for the modernization and innovation of commercial and industrial companies. Financial support of the associated companies allowed to promote type Erasmus exchange of PhD students with the University of Liverpool some years before the launching of that program. President and Chief Scientific Officer of \u00c6MITEQ an ID scientific association addressed to chemical quality control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, an associate of the Portuguese Chemical Society and the Society of Porphyrins & Phthalocyanines (SPP). He has been a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon since 2009. He was awarded the Excellence award by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
