FERNANDO NORONHA (Fernando Manuel Pereira de Noronha) was born in Espinho in 1946. He graduated in Geology from the Faculty of Science of the University of Porto (FCUP) in 1970, obtained his Diploma of Advanced Studies (D.E.A.) in Applied Geology, Metallogeny option at the \u00c9cole Nationale Sup\u00e9rieure de G\u00e9ologie (ENSG) in Nancy in 1972, and completed his PhD in Geology (specializing in Economic Geology) in 1983. In 1989, he passed the qualifying exams for the title of Professor Agregado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was a teaching assistant at the FCUP (1970-1983), Assistant Professor (1983), Associate Professor (1985) and Full Professor (1991) at the same faculty. He retired in 2016 and has been Professor Emeritus of the University of Porto since 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fernando Noronha has been a researcher at the Geology Center of the University of Porto (CGUP) since its creation in 1978 and was its scientific coordinator from 2004 to 2014, when the CGUP was integrated into the Institute of Earth Sciences (ICT) (Porto pole), of which he was coordinator until 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was distinguished and received awards, including: visiting member of the Galician Academy of Sciences (Santiago de Compostela) (1992) and corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon (2002). In 1969, he was awarded the Soares dos Guimar\u00e3es award for having obtained the best marks in the subject of General Geology in the 1967\/1968 academic year. In 1972, he was awarded the Rotary Club of Porto prize for having obtained the best degree classification at FCUP in the 1969\/1970 academic year. He was awarded the \u201cCentenary\u201d prize from FCUP (2013), the \u201cMedal of Merit\u201d from the European Federation of Geologists (2022) and the \u201cMedal of Merit\u201d from Porto City Council (2024).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is a member of the following scientific associations: Sociedade Geol\u00f3gica de Portugal (since 1978); \u201cSociety for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits\u201d (SGA) (since 1984); \u201cSoci\u00e9t\u00e9 Fran\u00e7aise de Min\u00e9ralogie et Cristalographie\u201d (since 1988); \u201cThe International Association on the genesis of ore deposits\u201d IAGOD, (since 1994); \u201cSociedad Espa\u00f1ola de Mineralogia y Cristalografia\u201d (since 1996).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
