Jo\u00e3o C. Duarte is a geologist working in different aspects of Earth sciences. He was granted a PhD by the University of Lisbon in 2012 and was a Research Fellow at Monash University between 2011 and 2015. He is currently a Deputy Director of the Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL) and an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Works in the geodynamic modelling of different tectonic environments and the different spheres of the Earth system, including subduction initiation, the link between tectonics and tides, and the climate of the deep-time Earth. Recently, became involved in works on other rocky planets and moons, with a special interest in the origin of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Is the elected-president of the Tectonics and Structural Geology Division of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), a member of the Council of the European Geosciences Union and a member of the editorial board of Communications Earth and Environment – Nature Portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2017, was awarded the Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Early Career Scientists of the European Geosciences Union (EGU)\u200b, in 2015 he was awarded the Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) from the Australian Research Council\u200b and in 2011 was awarded the IPGP Foreign Student Award 2011 for outstanding PhD research from the Institute de Physique du Globe de Paris\u200b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
