He is a physician and full professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, and has been a visiting professor at several European, Asian, African and South American universities. His roles include, among others, President of the Portuguese National Academy of Medicine, of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, the International Academy of Legal Medicine, the International Association of Forensic Sciences, the Mediterranean Academy of Forensic Sciences, the World Association of Police Doctors, the European Council of Legal Medicine, the Ibero-American Network of Legal Medicine and Forensic Science Institutions, and the Portuguese Association for the Assessment of Personal Injury. He was also Director of the Institute of Legal Medicine of Coimbra, President of the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, of the Medico-Legal Council, of the Superior Council of Legal Medicine, of the College of the Specialty of Legal Medicine and of the Competence in the Management of Health Services of the Portuguese Medical Association, member of the National Council of Ethics for Life Sciences, of the National Commission for Civil Protection, of the National Commission for Human Rights, among numerous other functions.\u00a0He has received multiple awards and honorary distinctions, including the Douglas Lucas Award (best global forensic expert), the Milton Helpern Award (best forensic pathologist) and the Douglas Lucas Award (outstanding career dedicated to humanitarian forensic action) from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the IAFS Human Rights Award from the International Association of Forensic Sciences, and is an honorary member of national academies and forensic academies from multiple countries of the 5 continents, as well as an Doctor <em>Honoris Causa<\/em> from the Universities of Iasi (Romania) and Santiago de Compostela (Spain). He is Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Forensic Science Research and is or has been a member of the editorial board of the main international journals in the field of forensic medicine and forensic sciences and of scientific journals from 18 countries on 5 continents. He regularly serves as a Temporary Forensic Consultant for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as a member of the International Group of Experts of the International Committee of the Red Cross and of the International Group of Experts of the International Council for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Torture, and has participated in dozens of international missions.
