After completing his bachelor&#8217;s degree in Pharmacy at the University of Lisbon (1954), he graduated in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy of UP (1956) and obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry (1964) at the same university, where he completed his Habilitation in 1970. He completed specialization internships at Washington University and the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carvalho Guerra played a fundamental role in the development of Higher Education and national research in Biochemistry and Biotechnology, assuming several prominent positions throughout his career. He was the first President of the Portuguese Pharmaceutical Association in 1973, President of the Portuguese Society of Biochemistry for three terms, and Secretary General of the Experimental Cytology Center at UP (1975-1995). He was the first President and co-founder of the Portuguese Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Vice-Rector of UP (1985-1991), President of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Pharmacy of UP (1994-2001), member of the Permanent Research Commission of NATO (1968-1975) and member of the Research Projects Committee of NATO (1973-1978) and its President (1997-1998), National Coordinator of the National Biotechnology Program of JNICT (1988), President of the Porto Regional Center of the Portuguese Catholic University (1991-2006), President of the Association of Universities of the Northern Region (1997). He was elected President of the Northern Region Institute for Agricultural Development in 2006 and in 2009, and President of the Portuguese Forestry Association in 2001, 2005 and 2009. He was appointed by the Portuguese Parliament as a member of the National Ethics Council for Life Sciences (2009-2015).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout his life, Carvalho Guerra received several honors, including Grand Officer of the Order of Public Instruction (1985), Grand Cross of the Military Order of Christ (1995), awarded by the President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio, Commendation of St. Gregory the Great, awarded by Pope John Paul II in 2003, Commendation of the Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great, awarded by Pope Francis in 2020.<br>When he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in 2019, he highlighted the excellence of his scientific work in the areas of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biochemistry, recognizing his fundamental role in stimulating scientific research in Portugal.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Francisco Jos\u00e9 Amorim de Carvalho Guerra, born in Braga on October 19, 1932, is a retired Full Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (UP) and the Portuguese Catholic University, specializing in Biochemistry.
