Degree in Dental Medicine (1980), Doctorate (1995) and Habilitation (1999) all from the University of Lisbon. He specialized in Periodontology at the University of Bergen (1981-1983). He has been a Full Professor since 2001. He was Visiting Researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, USA (1986), Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan (1989-1990), the University of Southern California, USA (1998-2010) and the University of Pennsylvania, USA (2002-2006).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Throughout his career he has given more than 230 lectures and conferences in 20 different countries and has held university management positions: Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the University of Lisbon (2000-2004) and Rector of the Egas Moniz University Institute since June 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gil Alcoforado is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists (1985), having been regent for Portugal (2009-2007), Vice-President (2017), President-elect (2018), President (2019-2022) and organizer of the annual Congress in Porto (2022). He was a founder of the Portuguese Society of Periodontology and Implants (SPPI) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), President of the European Federation of Periodontology (1996\/1997), Board Member of the International Association of Dental Research-IADR (Continental Division) (2001-2004), Fellow of the American College of Dentists (2009) and President of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Dental Association (2006-2009). He was elected to the Board of the European Association of Osseointegration (EAO) (2012), where he has been Chairman of the Education Committee (since 2017), responsible for the Master Clinician Courses, Secretary General (2018-2023), responsible for organizing the annual congress held in Lisbon (2019) and President (2024). He is a corresponding member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (2019) and a volunteer and President of the General Assembly of the NGO Mundo-a-Sorrir (since 2007). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
