Henrique Barros was born in Porto in 1957 and graduated in Medicine in 1981. He was a research fellow at Lund University Hospital (1988-89). In 1991, he received his PhD from the University of Porto and has been a Full Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Porto since 2000. He launched the Masters and PhD programs in Public Health at the University of Porto and the PhD program in Global Public Health, in conjunction with NOVA University of Lisbon. He was responsible for the design and implementation of the three Portuguese population-based cohorts that follow-up adults (EPiPorto), adolescents (EPITeen) and newborns (Gera\u00e7\u00e3o21). He has led multiple competitive projects with national and international funding that have allowed the supervision of more than three dozen doctoral students and the publication of more than 500 scientific articles mostly in perinatal, social and infectious disease epidemiology.
He was a member of the FCT Scientific Council for Health Sciences , of the Scientific Committee for Medical Sciences of Science Europe, and of the Executive Committee of the National Ethics Committee for Clinical Research, President of the Portuguese\u00a0 and the International Epidemiological Association, and of the External Scientific Advisory Committee of CIBERESP. Coordinator of the Portuguese HIV\/AIDS Program and President of the National Health Council. He is currently President of the Board of the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP) and President of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER). Coordinates the Epidemiology Research Unit and the Associated Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health (ITR).
