Jos\u00e9 Santos-Victor earned his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico (IST), Lisbon, Portugal, in collaboration with the University of Genoa, Italy, specializing in Artificial Vision and Robotics. He is a Full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at IST and a researcher at the Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR-Lisbon), where he founded VisLab \u2013 the Computer and Robot Vision Laboratory. He served as President of ISR-Lisbon (2015\u20132022) and Chair of the IST Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (2021\u20132024). Since November 2016, he has been the Coordinator of the Associated Laboratory of Robotics and Engineering Systems (LARSyS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He has played a key scientific role in numerous national and European projects in robotics and artificial vision, representing ISR-Lisbon and IST. His research focuses on computer vision, robotics, and learning systems, particularly the connection between perception and action. His work includes modeling biological systems and developing biologically plausible artificial systems, such as humanoid robots with human-like cognitive and learning capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He has served as an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Robotics and the Journal of Robotics and Autonomous Systems. He also coordinates the International Doctoral Program in Robotics, Brain, and Cognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was the IST Vice-President for International Affairs (2006-2014), Secretary General of the CLUSTER network (2010-2012), and member of the Board of Directors of the CESAER Network. He was responsible for the participation of IST in the EIT KIC Innoenergy, and a member of the InnoEnergy Supervisory Board (until 2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
