Father from Azores, mother from Berlin.<br>Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics (1972) Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg.<br><br>Next two decades at U.C. Berkeley as professor of cell physiology and biophysics, and at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) as assistant director of the Applied Science Division and director of Center for Atmospheric and Biospheric Effects of Technology. Belonged to several Graduate Programs and launched Graduate Program in Applied Science. Participated in the design and development of the Advanced Light Source and the Human Genome Center. Launched the High School Honors Program at LBNL.<br>\u00a0<br>Moved in1991 to Biomedical Faculty, University of Porto as professor of biophysics and Science Dean. Co-founded the degrees in Veterinary Medicine and in Bioengineering. Was, until 2010, director of both the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and chaired the committee to form a consortium of the three major biomedical institutions in Porto (i3S), currently the largest research center in health sciences in Portugal.<br>\u00a0<br>A member of several international Academies, chaired committees at ESF, EC, OECD and other national and international research organizations.\u00a0 Chaired the Council of Associate Laboratories of the Ministry of Science, was President of the Ethics Committee for Clinical Research, and chaired the Standing Council of the National School of Public Health, all in Portugal.<br>\u00a0<br>As a member of parliament during three legislatures, from 2015 to 2024, was Chair of the Parliamentary Commission on Culture and Communication and twice Chair of the Parliamentary Commission on Education and Science.<br>\u00a0<br>First publications in Solid State Physics (superconductivity and dislocation theory) and since then published extensively in the area of oxidative stress in living systems. Has always been involved in science policy.
