Jorge Buescu was born in Lisbon in 1964. He graduated in Physics from the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon in 1986, completed his Masters in Mathematics at the Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico in 1991 and obtained his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Warwick in 1995. After two decades as Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico, he is currently Associate Professor with Aggregation in the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was President of the Portuguese Mathematical Society, is Vice-President of the European Mathematical Society and a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is the author of more than half a hundred scientific papers in various areas of Mathematics published in international journals and around three hundred pedagogical and outreach articles. He is also an enthusiast of scientific dissemination, having written more than two hundred educational and dissemination articles, many of them born out of his collaboration with the magazine of the Order of Engineers Ingenium, in which he has had a regular column on Science for three decades. He is the author of more than a dozen books, ranging from pure and hard mathematics to science communication and essays. His latest book is Amor, Matem\u00e1tica e outros portentos (Love, Mathematics and Other Portents) (Gradiva 2022).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was awarded the R\u00f3mulo de Carvalho Prize for Research and Dissemination, was made a Corresponding Member of the Order of Engineers, was elected an honorary member of the Real Sociedad Matematica Espa\u00f1ola and was awarded the Ci\u00eancia Viva Grand Prize in 2024.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
