He is Associate Professor with Aggregation at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon (FLUL, 2023), where he was Deputy Director (2016-2019). He is the Director of the Area of History of FLUL and the Director of the PhD in Maritime History. He works on topics related to the history of empires, the history of the Atlantic, the social history of elites, history and political culture in the Atlantic area in the modern period (c. 1500-c. 1820). He primarily studies the political and social dimensions of urban government in Atlantic cities; the issue of reformism in the 18th and early 19th centuries from a comparative history perspective; and the relations between the Iberian monarchies in the 17th and 18th centuries.
