He holds the Chair of Biodiversity at the University of \u00c9vora and is a Research Professor at the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales in Madrid (CSIC), where he also served as Deputy Director. Additionally, he is the Editor-in-Chief of the international scientific journal Ecography. Previously, he was a researcher at the Natural History Museum in London, the Centre d\u2019Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive (CNRS) in Montpellier, the University of Oxford, and a Full Professor at the Universities of Copenhagen and Imperial College London. He has contributed to the preparation of various scientific advisory documents in the field of environmental policy, including for the IPCC, DIVERSITAS, and the Council of Europe. He is a member of the National Council for Environment and Sustainable Development and a scientific advisor to NATO\u2019s Science for Peace and Security Programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His research focuses on the spatial and temporal distribution of living organisms and their relationship with climate, pioneering work on addressing uncertainty in biogeographical models. In applied research, he is particularly interested in designing decision-making tools that enable optimized solutions for both biodiversity and society. In these areas, he has published over 250 articles in international scientific journals. In 2021, Thomson Reuters identified him at the top of the hot list of the world&#8217;s most influential climate researchers. Since 2014, he has been annually recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher. His work has received numerous international awards, including the Ernst Haeckel Prize from the European Ecological Federation (2019), the Rey Jaume I Prize awarded by the King and Queen of Spain (2016), the Wolfson Research Merit Award from the Royal Society of London (2014), the Ebbe Nielsen Prize from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (2013), and the MacArthur and Wilson Award from the International Biogeography Society (2013).
