Nascimento"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AIRES AUGUSTO NASCIMENTO was born in Palhais, Trancoso, on 20 July 1939. Ordained as a priest in 1962, he began his academic training at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon, where he graduated in Classical Philology in 1966. He became an assistant professor at the same institution in 1970 and obtained his doctorate in 1978 with a thesis in Medieval Latin Philology dedicated to the <em>Livro dos Arautos<\/em>. He also specialised in Medieval Studies at the University of Leuven, where he focused on documental sciences and codicology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout his academic career, Aires do Nascimento engaged with multiple disciplines, systematically studying Greek language and culture as well as Latin language and literature (Pliny, Ovid, Virgil, Propertius, Terence, among others). His work spanned Philology and History, Archaeology, medieval hagiography, iconography, epigraphy, and illumination, as well as codicology, palaeography, computational processing, and statistical analysis of medieval texts, translation, and the history of translation in Portugal. Over the course of his career, he published around five hundred articles and monographs on his areas of expertise. He also held various university management positions, serving as Pro-Rector of the University of Lisbon, Vice-President of the Scientific Council, Director of the Documentary Sciences programme, Director of the Centre for Classical Studies at the University of Lisbon (1982\u20132008), and Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal <em>Euphrosyne<\/em> (1986\u20132009). He played a key role in the internationalisation of Classical Studies teaching and research at the Faculty of Arts, establishing links with leading universities abroad, particularly in Spain, France, Belgium, and Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is member of different academies, national (Academia das Ci\u00eancias de Lisboa, Academia Portuguesa da Hist\u00f3ria) and foreigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His contribution to research and the preservation of textual heritage has been recognised with scientific awards and public honours, including the Latin Union\/FCT Translation Prize (2007), the Portuguese PEN Club Translation Prize (2007) for <em>Thomas More, Utopia: critical edition, translation, and commentary<\/em>, with an introductory study by Jos\u00e9 V. de Pina Martins (Lisbon, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, 2006), and his appointment as Grand Officer of the Order of Saint James of the Sword by the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on 26 January 2023.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AIRES AUGUSTO NASCIMENTO was born in Palhais, Trancoso, on 20 July 1939.
