Eduardo Romano de Arantes e Oliveira is Professor Emeritus at the Instituto Superior T\u00e9cnico (IST) and was a Full Professor in the Civil Engineering Department at IST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was Vice-Rector (1972-1977) and Rector (1977-1987) of the Technical University of Lisbon. He was Director of LNEC (1991-1998) and chaired its Advisory Board. He was President of the Engineering Sciences Council of the former INIC, President of the National Mechanics Commission and President of the General Council of Universidade Nova de Lisboa. As an independent, Eduardo Arantes e Oliveira served as Secretary of State for Higher Education and Scientific Research (1978-1979). He is a member of the General Assembly of the International Union of Mechanics – IUTAM and IUTAM’s representative to the International Association for Computational Methods – IACM, an organization of which he is a founding member and fellow. He is the author of numerous scientific papers on structural mechanics and analysis and, in particular, on the theoretical bases of the finite element method. His numerous publications include the book: Elements of the theory of elasticity<\/em>. IST Press, 2nd edition, 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He is a full member of several academies, including the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, of which he was president (2007, 2009, 2011) and is an emeritus member, the Academies of Engineering (emeritus) and the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco. He is an emeritus member of the Navy Academy and an honorary member of the Portuguese Academy of History and the Geographical Society. He holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Lisbon, Li\u00e9ge (Belgium), East Asia (Macau), Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Macau (China).<\/p>\n\n\n\n He has received decorations and distinctions including Grand Cross of the Order of Infante D.
