Daqian Li, also known as Tatsien Li, was born in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, China He completed his undergraduate studies at the Department of Mathematics at Fudan University between 1953 and 1957 and pursued graduate studies from 1962 to 1966. He was a visiting scholar at the Coll\u00e8ge de France in Paris (1979-1981). He is a renowned mathematician specializing in the theory and numerical analysis of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations that has advanced the understanding of gas dynamics and elasticity. Throughout his career, Daqian Li has remained dedicated to international collaboration and education, particularly through the annual summer schools organized by the ISFMA.
Daqian Li has been a Full Professor at Fudan University since 1980, served as Dean of the Graduate School (1991-1999), as Co-Director of the Mathematical Center of the Ministry of Education of China (since 1996) and of the Institut Sino-Fran\u00e7ais de Math\u00e9matiques Appliqu\u00e9es (ISFMA) that he co-founded with Jacques-Louis Lions in 1998. He directed the Organizing Committee for the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling from 1998, and the Directing Committee of Teaching on Mathematics and Statistics of the Ministry of Education (2001\u20132013). He was President of the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (2000\u20132008) and Officer-at-large of the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (2003\u20132011).
He was elected a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1995) and a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (1997). He is Foreign Member of the French Academy of Sciences (2005), the European Academy of Sciences (2007), and a Senior Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study, City University of Hong Kong. He was awarded the Chevalier de la L\u00e9gion d\u2019Honneur (2008) and received an honorary doctorate from Universit\u00e9 Paris 12\u2013Val de Marne (2008).
