Elected the 4th and 7th President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (2007\u20132012 and 2022\u2013).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was awarded honorary doctorates by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (2000), Victoria University, Australia (2001), and Gyungwoon University of Busan, South Korea (2018). He was decorated by the Presidents of the Portuguese Republic with the Gr\u00e3-Cruz da Ordem da Liberdade (1998), the Grande Colar da Ordem do Infante D.
