He completed his university education at the Technical University of Darmstadt \u2013 Engineering Studies in Geodesy and Earth Observation, where he successively obtained the degrees of Dipl.-Ing. (univ.) (1973), Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) with &#8220;summa cum laude\u201d (1976) and Habilitation Dr.-Ing.habil. (Satellite Gradiometry) (1981).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He began his research activity at the Institute of Physical Geodesy of the University of Darmstadt (1979-1983), was a Full Professor of Astronomy and Physical Geodesy at University of the Bundeswehr Munich (1983-2008) and served as Director of the Institute of Geodesy. G\u00fcnter W. Hein has held the title of \u201cEmeritus of Excellence\u201d at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich since 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hein played a pivotal role in the development of the European Galileo satellite navigation system. As Germany&#8217;s representative in the European Commission&#8217;s Galileo Signal Task Force, he was instrumental in defining the system&#8217;s high-performance signal structure. His efforts were crucial in achieving interoperability between Galileo and the U.S. GPS, culminating in the 2004 U.S.\u2013EU Agreement on GPS\u2013Galileo Cooperation.<br><br>In 2008, he joined the European Space Agency (ESA) as Head of the EGNOS and GNSS Evolution Programme Department, where he was responsible until 2014 for the technical advancement of EGNOS and Galileo systems. Since December 2017, Prof. Hein has served as Chairman of the Executive Board of Munich Aerospace and continues to act as an advisor to ESA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His work has been honored with a wide range of prestigious awards, including the Johannes Kepler Award from the U.S. Institute of Navigation (2002) and the European Inventor Award (2017) for his work on Galileo signals.
