Dr. Carlos Cramez is of Portuguese origin and holds Swiss and French citizenship. Born in 1939 in Vila Real, Portugal, he graduated from the Camilo Castelo Branco Academy and earned a degree in Geology from the University of Porto. With a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation scholarship, he spent five years in Switzerland and Norway, studying and working under Professor C. E. Wegmann at the University of Neuch\u00e2tel, where he obtained a Ph.D. in Tectonics in 1968.
He began his career as Chief Geologist for a subsidiary of ALCAN in Brazil before joining Compagnie Fran\u00e7aise des P\u00e9troles (now TotalEnergies) in 1968. Throughout his career, he has been actively involved in petroleum exploration worldwide, including Angola, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Canada, the USA, North Africa, the North Sea, South America, the Middle East, and Asia.
At Total, he held key positions, including Head of Seismic Interpretation, and in 1987, he was appointed
Advisor to the Senior Vice President of Exploration & Production. His expertise contributed to major oil discoveries such as Bekapai and Handil (Indonesia), Lombo East (Angola), and Cusiana (Colombia).
Beyond the industry, Dr. Cramez has lectured at prestigious institutions, including the Universities
of Neuch\u00e2tel, Besan\u00e7on, Caracas, and Havana, the Institut Fran\u00e7ais du P\u00e9trole, Rice University, and various national oil companies. From 1989 to 2003, he was Adjunct Professor of Geology and Geophysics at Rice University (USA), collaborating with Professors Albert Bally, Peter Vail, and Manik Twani. In 2015, he was unanimously elected a Foreign Academician of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. He has published numerous scientific papers on seismic interpretation, sequence stratigraphy, salt tectonics, and petroleum systems.
