{"id":21857,"date":"2025-01-27T10:46:49","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T10:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.acad-ciencias.pt\/?post_type=ac_scholars&#038;p=21857"},"modified":"2025-02-21T15:08:52","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T15:08:52","slug":"antonio-torres","status":"publish","type":"ac_scholars","link":"https:\/\/www.acad-ciencias.pt\/eng\/scholars\/antonio-torres\/","title":{"rendered":"Ant\u00f4nio Torres"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before turning to literature, Ant\u00f4nio Torres worked in journalism, first in Bahia, where he was born (S\u00e1tiro Dias, 1940), then in S\u00e3o Paulo, where he moved into advertising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He lived in Portugal for three years, from 1965 to 1968, which he considers fundamental to his literary education, as here he had the privilege of living with the poet Alexandre O&#8217;Neill, the fiction writer Jos\u00e9 Cardoso Pires, and the best in cinema and theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He made his literary debut in 1972 with <em>Um c\u00e3o uivando para a Lua<\/em>, which had a huge impact on critics and the public. Today, he is the author of an extensive and award-winning body of work, with several editions in Brazil and translations in many countries, from Argentina to Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His awards include the Pen Clube do Brasil prize for <em>Balada da inf\u00e2ncia perdida<\/em>, the <em>Hors Concours<\/em> Novel Prize from the Brazilian Writers&#8217; Union for <em>O cachorro e o lobo<\/em>, the Machado de Assis Prize from the Brazilian Academy of Letters and the Grande Pr\u00e9mio Cidade do Rio de Janeiro, both for his work as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1998 he received the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres commendation from the French government for his books published in France up to that point: <em>Essa Terra<\/em> and <em>Um t\u00e1xi para Vienna d&#8217;Austria<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seven of his novels have been published in Portugal: <em>Meu Querido Canibal<\/em> (Figueirinhas, 2000), <em>O nobre sequestrador <\/em>(Sa\u00edda de Emerg\u00eancia, 2003), and, by Teodolito, part of the Afrontamento group, <em>Essa Terra<\/em> (2016), <em>O cachorro e o lobo<\/em> (2017), <em>Pelo fundo da agulha<\/em> (2018), <em>Querida Cidade<\/em> (2023), <em>Os homens dos p\u00e9s redondos<\/em> (2024), as well as a short story in the anthology <em>O prazer da leitura<\/em> (Fnac\/Teodolito, 2016).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Lusophone Corresponding Member of the Class of Letters of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, Ant\u00f4nio Torres is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, to which he was elected in 2013.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before turning to literature, Ant\u00f4nio Torres worked in journalism, first in Bahia, where he was born (S\u00e1tiro Dias, 1940), then in S\u00e3o Paulo, where he moved into advertising.
