He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Barcelona (2011-). He was Professor at the Universidad de Murcia (1963-1966) and the Universitat de Barcelona (1966-2011), and Guest Professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela (1976), the Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de M\u00e9xico (1985), the Universidad de Buenos Aires (1985), the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (1987 and 1996) and the Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Chile (1989). He coordinated <em>Geo Cr\u00edtica. Cuadernos Cr\u00edticos de Geograf\u00eda Humana<\/em> (Barcelona, 1976-1994) and <em>Scripta Nova. Revista Electr\u00f3nica de Geograf\u00eda y Ciencias Sociales<\/em> (Barcelona, 1998-2020). Founder and coordinator of 13 International Geocritical Colloquia: Barcelona, Santiago de Chile, Ciudad de M\u00e9xico, Porto Alegre, Buenos Aires and Bogot\u00e1 (1999-2014). He received the Preston E. James Eminent Latin Americanist Career Award (2006), the Prix International de G\u00e9ographie Vautrin Lud \u201cNobel Prize in Geography\u201d (2008) and the Francisco Jos\u00e9 de Caldas Geography Prize from the Colombian Association of Geographers (2012). He is Academician of the Mexican Academy of Sciences (2013) and Doctor <em>Honoris Causa<\/em> by the National University of San Juan, Argentina (1999), by the National University Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina (2002) and by the University of Buenos Aires (2010). He is the author of hundreds of scientific works in the field of Urban Geography and the theory and evolution of Geography, among which stand out: <em>Lorca and its area of influence<\/em> (1964), <em>Studies on the Urban System<\/em> (1974), <em>Capitalism and Urban Morphology in Spain<\/em> (1975), <em>Philosophy and Science in Contemporary Geography<\/em> (1981), <em>Geography and Mathematics in 18th century Spain<\/em> (1982<em>), Sacred Physics: Religious Beliefs and Scientific Theories in the Origins of Spanish Geomorphology<\/em> (1985), <em>Human Geography and Social Sciences<\/em> (1987), <em>From Palas to Minerva: the Scientific Training and Institutional Structure of Military Engineers in the 18th Century, com J. S\u00e1nchez and O. Moncada<\/em> (1988), <em>Los Espacios Acotados. Geography and Social Domination<\/em> (1990), <em>Drawing the World.
