Viriato Soromenho Marques was born in Set\u00fabal on 9 December 1957. He is a philosopher, professor, and environmentalist. He graduated in Philosophy from the University of Lisbon (1979), obtained a master’s degree in Contemporary Philosophy from the Nova University of Lisbon (1985), with a thesis on nihilism in Nietzsche, and earned a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Lisbon (1991), with the dissertation Reason and Progress in Kant\u2019s Philosophy<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Full Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon since 2003, he has taught History and Culture of Philosophy, Political and Legal Philosophy, Social and Political Philosophy, History of Ideas in Contemporary Europe, and Environment in Europe. He coordinated the Master’s programme in Philosophy of Nature and Environment (1995-1996) and was one of the founders of the Doctoral Programme in Climate Change and Sustainable Development (2009). He has been a guest lecturer at numerous universities across Europe, the Americas, and Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His academic involvement extends beyond teaching. He has been a member of several scientific organisations, including the Portuguese Society of Philosophy, the International Society for Ecological Economics, and the American Political Science Association. He served as Portugal\u2019s representative for the German environmental studies organisation Ecologic<\/em> and has contributed extensively to environmental policy. From 1992 to 1995, he was president of QUERCUS, Portugal\u2019s most significant environmental organisation, and in 2016, he co-founded ZERO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viriato Soromenho-Marques has held advisory roles in national and international institutions. He represented environmental NGOs at Portugal\u2019s Economic and Social Council (1992-1996), participated in the National UNESCO Commission, and served on Lisbon\u2019s Strategic Plan Council. He was part of Portugal\u2019s delegation to the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg and advised the European Commission\u2019s High-Level Group on Energy and Climate Change (2007-2010). He was a key figure in drafting Portugal\u2019s National Strategy for Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He authored around 400 academic studies and numerous books on philosophy, political strategy, and environmental issues. His main publications include Europa: O Risco do Futuro<\/em> (1985), O Futuro Fr\u00e1gil: Os Desafios da Crise Global do Ambiente<\/em> (1998), and Depois da Queda: A Uni\u00e3o Europeia entre o Reerguer e a Fragmenta\u00e7\u00e3o<\/em> (2019). He has received numerous accolades, including the Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D.
