Lu\u00eds Menezes Pinheiro graduated in Mining Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and obtained an M.Sc. (1985) in Geophysical Data Processing from the University of Aveiro. In 1994, he was awarded a Ph.D. in Marine Geophysics by Imperial College London, United Kingdom, thereby consolidating a solid academic background in key topics related to the understanding of the oceanic crust and continental margins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His academic career at the University of Aveiro began in 1981, progressing through the rank of Assistant Professor and, since 2012, serving as an Associate Professor in the Department of Geosciences. He teaches and supervises research activities in marine geology, sedimentary processes, continental margin structures, and marine geohazards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Menezes Pinheiro has held important positions of scientific leadership, including the presidency of the Portuguese Committee of UNESCO\u2019s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), where he represents Portugal on the IOC Executive Council and serves as the national Sherpa for the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. He is also the founder and coordinator of the All-Atlantic Floating University Network, an international marine science training initiative involving dozens of programs in more than 20 countries. In 2023, he was appointed coordinator of the National Committee for the Ocean Science Decade (2021\u20132030). He has led international scientific committees, such as the CIESM Committee on Marine Geosciences, and has participated in dozens of oceanographic expeditions as chief scientist, consolidating a career of significant scientific impact and global cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
