His research interests are grouped into two main areas: the development of numerical methods and analytical tools for the analysis and design of lightweight and thin‑walled structures, and the mechanics and simulation of nanostructures and nanocomposites. In the field of slender structures, his work on the development and advancement of the Generalized Beam Theory (GBT) has achieved international recognition, contributing decisively to the advanced analysis of instability, deformation modes and post‑buckling behaviour of structural elements.

In the area of nanomaterials, Nuno Silvestre has produced significant contributions to the computational modelling and mechanical behaviour of carbon nanotubes, graphene and nanocomposites reinforced with nanoengineered materials. His work integrates multiscale approaches, advanced numerical methods and atomistic simulation, enabling the characterization of emergent properties and reinforcement mechanisms in nanoengineered materials. His scientific output includes more than three hundred articles published in indexed international journals, several edited books and over four hundred communications at international conferences, accumulating an expressive number of citations.

Since 2018, Nuno Silvestre has been Editor‑in‑Chief of Thin‑Walled Structures (Elsevier, Q1), one of the highest‑impact international journals in the field of structural engineering. For his scientific achievements, he has received multiple national and international awards, including the Vinnakota Award (USA), the IJSSD Award, the Ferry Borges Award and several distinctions for scientific merit. He served as President of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IDMEC) and as Vice‑Coordinator of the Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transportation and Aeronautics (LAETA). He is currently a member of the General Council of UL, a member of the Scientific Council of IST and Coordinator of the Scientific Area of Structural and Computational Mechanics at DEM‑IST.

Nuno Silvestre is Full Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon (UL).
