O dia 10 de novembro foi proclamado em 2001 pela UNESCO como o Dia Mundial da Ci\u00eancia para a Paz e Desenvolvimento. Este ano, o International Science Council (ISC), de que a Academia de Ci\u00eancias de Lisboa (ACL) \u00e9 membro, decidiu promover, globalmente, a comemora\u00e7\u00e3o deste dia para reafirmar o papel vital da ci\u00eancia na promo\u00e7\u00e3o da paz, do desenvolvimento sustent\u00e1vel e do bem-estar para todos.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Nunca a ci\u00eancia e a tecnologia foram t\u00e3o cruciais para a paz e o desenvolvimento sustent\u00e1vel da humanidade. Estamos a viver um paradoxo sem precedentes na hist\u00f3ria. Nunca tivemos \u00e0 nossa disposi\u00e7\u00e3o conhecimentos, compet\u00eancias e ferramentas capazes de ter um impacto t\u00e3o profundo no sistema terrestre. No entanto, nunca a aus\u00eancia de racionalidade pol\u00edtica, a gan\u00e2ncia econ\u00f3mica e o aventureirismo militar e tecnol\u00f3gico pareceram t\u00e3o inclinados a usar o crescente poder tecnocient\u00edfico de forma catastr\u00f3fica contra o nosso espl\u00eandido e fr\u00e1gil lar no cosmos. Na encruzilhada entre o caminho da destrui\u00e7\u00e3o violenta e o da coopera\u00e7\u00e3o que redime o futuro, as comunidades cient\u00edficas, particularmente na Europa, n\u00e3o podem permanecer indiferentes<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Neste contexto, a ACL associa-se a esta evoca\u00e7\u00e3o, com a organiza\u00e7\u00e3o de uma mesa-redonda no dia 10 de novembro pelas 16h00 (Lisboa), 15h00 UTC, que ser\u00e1 transmitida tamb\u00e9m por videoconfer\u00eancia.<\/p>\n

A sess\u00e3o, organizada por\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Lu\u00eds Cardoso<\/strong>\u00a0(Presidente da Classe de Letras, que preside),\u00a0Jorge Miguel Miranda<\/strong>\u00a0(Vice-presidente da Classe de Ci\u00eancias)\u00a0e\u00a0Isabel S\u00e1-Correia<\/strong>\u00a0(Secret\u00e1ria-Geral da Academia)\u00a0conta com a participa\u00e7\u00e3o dos acad\u00e9micos Viriato Soromenho-Marques,<\/strong>\u00a0que\u00a0far\u00e1 a introdu\u00e7\u00e3o<\/mark><\/a><\/span>,\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio Sampaio da N\u00f3voa<\/strong>,\u00a0Susana Peralta<\/strong>, e\u00a0Jos\u00e9\u00a0Luiz Pinto Ramalho.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00c0s interven\u00e7\u00f5es seguir-se-\u00e3o coment\u00e1rios pelos organizadores e por\u00a0M\u00e1rio Figueiredo<\/strong>, e um per\u00edodo de debate.<\/p>\n

November 10 was proclaimed in 2001 by UNESCO as the World Science Day for Peace and Development. This year, the International Science Council (ISC), of which the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon (ACL) is a member, decided to promote a global commemoration to endorse the vital role of science in promoting peace, sustainable development and well-being for all.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Never have science and technology been so crucial to peace and sustainable development for humanity. We are experiencing a paradox unprecedented in history. Never have we had at our disposal knowledge, skills and tools capable of having such a profound impact on the Earth system. However, never have the absence of political rationality, economic greed and military and technological adventurism seemed so inclined to use the growing techno-scientific power catastrophically against our splendid and fragile home in the cosmos. At the crossroads between the path of violent destruction and the one of cooperation that redeems the future, scientific communities, particularly in Europe, cannot remain indifferent.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In this context, the ACL has decided to join this evocation, with the organization of a round table on the 10th of November at 16h00 (Lisbon), 15h00 UTC, which will be also broadcast by videoconference.<\/p>\n

The session, organized by\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Lu\u00eds Cardoso<\/strong>\u00a0(President of the Class of Letters,\u00a0who willchair\u00a0),\u00a0Jorge Miguel Miranda<\/strong>\u00a0(Vice-President of the Class of Sciences) and\u00a0Isabel S\u00e1-Correia<\/strong>\u00a0(General-Secretary of the Academy) will have the participation of academics Viriato Soromenho-Marques<\/strong>, who<\/mark>\u00a0will give the introduction<\/mark><\/a>,\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio Sampaio da N\u00f3voa<\/strong>,\u00a0Susana Peralta<\/strong>, and\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Luiz Pinto Ramalho<\/strong>.
