With a first degree in History (Lisbon, 1982) and a PhD in Archaeology (London, 1994), Luiz Oosterbeek is a Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, President of the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences and holder of the UNESCO-IPT Chair in Humanities and Cultural Integrated Management of the Landscape. Deputy Director of the Centre for Geosciences, researcher in archaeology, rock art, heritage and landscape management in Portugal, Africa and South America, he is the author of more than 300 articles and 90 books. He has received prizes, awards and support from the European Commission, the Ministry of Culture, the Gulbenkian Foundation, the Foundation for Science and Technology, the Brazilian Bar Association and private sponsors. He is a former member of the Scientific Council of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris, appointed by the French government. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the European University Centre for Cultural Heritage in Ravello and a visiting professor at Universities in Europe, Africa, Asia and Brazil. President of the Instituto Terra e Memória (Portugal), he is Director of the Museum of Prehistoric Art of Mação (PT) and Vice-President of HERITY International (IT). Former Secretary-General of the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences, he is the representative of the Foundation for Science and Technology on the Board of the Humanities European Research Area (HERA) network. Member of the Portuguese Academy of History, the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon and the Academia Europaea. He is part of the Directing Board of UNESCO’s BRIDGES Programme.
