Full Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Coimbra, with 40 years of experience as a researcher and university teacher. The expertise lies within alluvial stratigraphy, sedimentology, geomorphology, neotectonics, geoarchaeology and luminescence dating.
Published research interests include Mesozoic to Cenozoic basin analysis, and more recently focusing fluvial and marine terrace sequences.

Research has typically involved the analysis of key controlling mechanisms (tectonics, climate and eustacy) and quantifying rates of change using dating techniques (mainly optically stimulated luminescence within Quaternary fluvial and coastal settings).
