Victor Manuel de Matos Lobo was born on February 18, 1940 in Coimbra, Portugal. He graduated with honors in Physical and Chemical Sciences from the University of Coimbra in 1963. He was invited to become an assistant professor in Coimbra and to go to the University of Mozambique on a commission. In 1966, he went to Cambridge, England, for his doctorate. At the University of Coimbra, he became associate professor in 1975 and full professor in 1981, continuing his research in electrochemistry.
He published textbooks for his courses. In 1977 he published a Portuguese translation of a book on Chemical Thermodynamics, a course he taught for decades. In 1975 he published Vol. I of a work entitled “Electrolyte Solutions: Literature Data on Thermodynamic and Transport Properties”. In 1989 he published “Self-diffusion in Electrolyte Solutions. A critical examination of data compiled from the literature” (Elsevier, Amsterdam). In 1990, he published a two-volume work of around 2,500 pages for Elsevier entitled “Handbook of Electrolyte Solutions”. He organized a basic electrochemistry database for the Scientific Engineering Research Council in the United Kingdom.
