Professor at Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, University of Cape Town, Associate Fellow at Chatham House, Foundation Fellow of the International Science Council, Senior Visiting Fellow of the Overseas Development Institute, Fellow of SOAS Development Leadership Dialogue, University of London, and a Member of the Cambridge University’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership Advisory Group.

Widely published he has been associated with several high-level boards, including the Global Commission for Economy and Climate, Global Commission for the Future of Work, Global Commission on the Geopolitics of Energy Transformation, and the International Commission of Experts for Financing for Development. He Is a current member of several boards and Chairs the Board of the African Climate Foundation. He is an Honorary Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences.

He is the former Chair of the ISCTE-Lisbon University Institute General Council (2009 to 2017), and past head of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, UN System Staff College and the UN Economic Commission for Africa.

He has occupied prominent positions such as UN Assistant Secretary-General and Political Director for Secretary-General Kofi Annan and African Union High Representative for Partnerships with Europe.
