Herbert Anton Mang is a distinguished Austrian civil engineer and academic renowned for his work in computational mechanics and structural analysis. He earned his Dipl.-Ing. in Civil Engineering from the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) in 1967, followed by a Dr. techn. in 1970. In 1974, he obtained a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering and Mathematics from Texas Tech University, USA.
At TU Wien, he was appointed Full Professor of Strength of Materials in 1983 and served as Head of the Institute for Strength of Materials from 1984 to 2004. Since 2010, he has held the title of Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Mechanics of Materials and Structures. He also served as Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering (1991–1994) and Vice-Rector of the university (1994–1995). Beyond TU Wien, he held visiting appointments at leading institutions, including the University of Tokyo and Tongji University in Shanghai, where he was named National RPGE Chair Professor in 2012.
His research focuses on the mechanics of deformable solids, structural mechanics, and computational methods, with significant contributions to finite and boundary element methods. He has published more than 400 scientific papers and has co-edited several international journals.
His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including six honorary doctorates, the Wilhelm Exner Medal (1995), the Carl Friedrich Gauss Medal (2007), and the Nathan M. Newmark Medal (2014). He is a member of several prestigious academies, such as the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.
