He has a degree in Philosophy and Letters – History, from the University of Murcia (1963) and a PhD in Geography and Letters – Geography, from the University of Barcelona (1972), with the thesis La Red Urbana Española, 1950-1960. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Barcelona (2011-). He was Professor at the Universidad de Murcia (1963-1966) and the Universitat de Barcelona (1966-2011), and Guest Professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela (1976), the Universidad Autónoma de México (1985), the Universidad de Buenos Aires (1985), the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (1987 and 1996) and the Universidad Católica de Chile (1989). He coordinated Geo Crítica. Cuadernos Críticos de Geografía Humana (Barcelona, 1976-1994) and Scripta Nova. Revista Electrónica de Geografía y Ciencias Sociales (Barcelona, 1998-2020). Founder and coordinator of 13 International Geocritical Colloquia: Barcelona, Santiago de Chile, Ciudad de México, Porto Alegre, Buenos Aires and Bogotá (1999-2014). He received the Preston E. James Eminent Latin Americanist Career Award (2006), the Prix International de Géographie Vautrin Lud “Nobel Prize in Geography” (2008) and the Francisco José de Caldas Geography Prize from the Colombian Association of Geographers (2012). He is Academician of the Mexican Academy of Sciences (2013) and Doctor Honoris Causa by the National University of San Juan, Argentina (1999), by the National University Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina (2002) and by the University of Buenos Aires (2010). He is the author of hundreds of scientific works in the field of Urban Geography and the theory and evolution of Geography, among which stand out: Lorca and its area of influence (1964), Studies on the Urban System (1974), Capitalism and Urban Morphology in Spain (1975), Philosophy and Science in Contemporary Geography (1981), Geography and Mathematics in 18th century Spain (1982), Sacred Physics: Religious Beliefs and Scientific Theories in the Origins of Spanish Geomorphology (1985), Human Geography and Social Sciences (1987), From Palas to Minerva: the Scientific Training and Institutional Structure of Military Engineers in the 18th Century, com J.
