Perfil
Ludwig Streit is a German mathematical physicist who has made contributions to quantum field theory, stochastic processes and infinite-dimensional analysis. After studying mathematics and physics at the University of Göttingen, he specialized in theoretical physics at the University of Graz, completing his PhD in 1963 under the supervision of Wolfhart Zimmermann and Paul Urban. His doctoral research focused on the analytic properties of scattering amplitudes.
Streit’s research has been instrumental in developing white noise analysis, providing a rigorous mathematical framework for Feynman path integrals. His contributions span quantum mechanics, nuclear physics, polymer physics, and the theory and applications of stochastic processes.
His academic career includes positions at several prestigious institutions. He served as a professor at Bielefeld University in Germany (1974-2003), where he played a key role in setting up the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) of which he was Director (1981-1985) and the Research Center for Stochastics and Applications (BiBoS). His international engagements have included visiting professorships at ETH Zurich, Syracuse University and Bell Laboratories. In Portugal, Streit also made contributions to the academic landscape. From 1989 to 1991, he was Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Minho. From 1991 to 2012, he was a Professor of Mathematics and Physics at the Universidade da Madeira in Funchal, where he directed the Centro de Ciências Matemáticas. In 2013, his efforts were recognized with an honorary doctorate from the Universidade da Madeira.
He has also received the title of Honorary Professor from the University of Graz (1972) and an honorary professorship from the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology in the Philippines. Since 2017, he has been a Foreign Corresponding Member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.
