Martín Almagro Gorbea is an archaeologist and museologist. PhD in History (Complutense University of Madrid, 1973), he has been Director of the National Archaeological Museum (Madrid) and Professor of Archaeology at the University of Valencia (1976-1981) and of Prehistory at the Complutense University of Madrid (1981-2016). Since 1997 he has been an Antiquarian of the Royal Academy of History.
Specialized in pre-Roman peoples of the Iberian Peninsula (Lusitanians, Celts, Tartessians, Iberians and Basques) and urban cultures of the Mediterranean (Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans).
He has excavated in Segobriga (Cuenca), Pozo Moro (Albacete) and Medellín (Badajoz) and in Italy (Gabii), France (Bibracte), Ireland, Germany, Egypt, etc.
He has organized exhibitions: I celti (Palazzo Grassi, Venecia); Celtas y Vetones (Ávila); Corona y Arqueología en el Siglo de las Luces (Madrid), Hernán Cortés (Madrid), etc.
He has published more than 1000 books and articles on Archaeology, Ethnogenesis, Museology and Cultural Heritage: El Estanque Monumental de Bibracte, Borgoña, Francia (1992), La necrópolis tartésica de Medellín (2008), Teutates. “El Héroe fundador” (2011), Literatura hispana prerromana (2013), Los Celtas, imaginario, mitos y literatura en España (2013), Berrocales sagrados de Extremadura (2021), Peñas sacras de Galicia (2022), etc. He has founded the journals Saguntum (Valencia) and Complutum (Complutense University) and the series Bibliotheca Archaeologica Hispana, Antiquaria Hispanica, Bibliotheca Numismatica Hispana and published the Catálogo del Gabinete de Antigüedades de la Real Academia de la Historia.
He has supervised 42 doctoral theses, has presented more than 200 papers at conferences and has given 500 lectures in various countries.
Alexander von Humboldt Award, he is a member of the Academy of Art and History of San Damaso, the Royal Academy of History, the Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain, the Portuguese Academy of History, the Basque Society of Friends of the Country, the International Academy of Prehistory and Protohistory, Honorary Academician of the Real Academia de Extremadura de Letras y Artes and of the Real Acadèmia de Cultura Valenciana and correspondent of the Academia de les Bones Lletres (Barcelona), de l’Acadèmie d’Aix-en-Provence, de l’Acadèmie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, and of the Royal Academies of Burgos, Toledo, Córdoba, das Ciencias de Lisboa, etc.
