Ricardo Cavaliere holds a PhD in Portuguese Language (1997) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and a degree in Legal and Social Sciences from the same university. He completed a post-doctoral internship in the History of Grammar in Brazil (2005) at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Evanildo Bechara. He is currently a retired professor at Fluminense Federal University, a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, where he occupies chair no. 8, the Brazilian Academy of Philology, where he occupies chair no. 29, and a corresponding member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura in Rio de Janeiro and the Liceu Literário Português in Rio de Janeiro. He is a member of national and international associations in his field of research, including the Société de Linguistique Romane, the Henry Sweet Society for the History of Linguistic Ideas, the Societas Linguistica Europeae, the Associação Brasileira de Linguística and the Société d’Histoire et d’Épistémologie des Sciences du Langage. He has experience in the fields of Literature and Linguistics, with an emphasis on the description of Portuguese and the historiography of grammatical studies. He is the author of over a hundred academic works in his field, including Fonologia e morfologia na gramática científica brasileira (2000), Pontos essenciais em fonética e fonologia (2005), Palavras denotativas e termos afins: uma visão argumentativa (2009), A gramática no Brasil: ideias, percursos e parâmetros (2014) e História da gramática no Brasil: séculos XVI a XIX (2022). His awards include the Medal of Philological Merit from the Brazilian Academy of Philology (2018) and the Celso Cunha Award from the Brazilian Writers’ Union (2015).
