1982-87 visits to Institute of Plant Biochemistry, Halle, East Germany (now Leibnitz Institute), bilateral cooperation, 2×3 month traineeship at Biological Research Centre, Szeged.

After 1989 built up cooperation with Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig, 1993-94 had EU grant with Universite Amiens 2×3 month,

1994/95 visiting professor at Utah State University.

1995 started teaching plant biochemistry at Fac. Food and Biochemical Technology, UCT, 1996/97 DFG grant, Federal Agricultural Research Centre Braunschweig,

1998 Associated Professor at Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology, UCT

2005/06 DAAD project Max-Planck-Institut Koeln.

2007 founded a Joint Laboratory of UCT and IOCB. Since nineties has been working on GM plants, improving properties to cope with adverse conditions, resistance to environmental stress, phyto/rhizoremediation, environmental biotechnology, metagenomics of rhizosphere and studies of enzyme effectors.

2010 became Full Professor of biochemistry at UCT. 2017 awarded extraordinary visiting professorship at Universidade Rio Cuarto, Argentina. Member of several Czech scientific societies and national committees, like Czech Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1990-2000 treasurer), International Society for Environmental Biotechnology (Board of Directors), International Phytotechnology Society or editorial boards (Trends in Biotechnology, The Cell Press).

In 2017 he was elected Foreign corresponding member of Academia das Ciencias de Lisboa.

Principal and co-principal investigator of 35 projects by Czech grant agencies, 5FW EU (GM-Rhizoremediation), 7FW EU (Minotaurus), several COST, bilateral Cz-US, Czech-Argentina.

Published over 300 items (WoS), Hirsch index = 40, without self-citations cited over 4000x. 

Member of several congress organising committees, IUB Prague, IUPAC Melbourne, EBC Brussels, FEBS Prague, ISEB Barcelona, IPS New York and many conferences worldwide. Evaluator of Czech research units or Portuguese universities for FCT.
