Vadim Yurievich Kukushkin, born in 1956, is a distinguished chemist and Foreign Member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon since 2011. He completed his education at the Lensovet Technological Institute, earning his Diploma with distinction in 1979 and Ph.D. in 1982, followed by a Doctor of Science degree from Saint Petersburg State University in 1992.

Professor Kukushkin has maintained a continuous academic presence at Saint Petersburg State University since 1984, serving as Full Professor since 1996 and leading the Department of Physical Organic Chemistry from 2007 to 2021. His research focuses on non-covalent interactions, organic synthesis involving metal complexes, catalysis, ligand reactivity, and platinum group metal chemistry.

His scientific excellence has been recognized through numerous honors, including election as a Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2019), Member of the European Academy of Sciences (2020), and the Order of Friendship (Russian Federation) in 2024. He received the “Professor of the Year” national award in 2023, the Chugaev Prize (2021) and the Nesmeyanov Prize (2024) from the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 2007, he has held a Distinguished Chair Professorship at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Lisbon in 2019 and later an Honorary Professor of the Technological Institute (2024), where he studied as a student.

Professor Kukushkin has authored over 440 scientific papers, 13 patents, and 9 monographs, garnering more than 9,400 citations without self-citation (Scopus h-index: 58). He has served as Vice-President of the Russian Chemical Society since 2016 and was Chairman of the Saint Petersburg branch (2012–2022). Beyond his research, Professor Kukushkin is dedicated to advancing chemical education and promoting international scientific collaboration.
