Xu Yixing (Catarina), Director of the Portuguese Department and Full Professor at the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), holds a PhD in Text Linguistics from the Nova University of Lisbon and was awarded the rank of Comendador of the Order of Merit by the former President of the Portuguese Republic, Prof. Cavaco Silva.

She is the author of various teaching materials for Chinese learners of Portuguese as a Foreign Language, such as Curso de Português para Chineses 1-4 and Olá Português, and the (co-)author of books in Chinese, including Grande Mestre de Epopeia Portuguesa: Camões and Breve História da Língua Portuguesa. She also (co-)translated works by Portuguese authors such as Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, António Lobo Antunes, Agustina Bessa-Luís, José Cardoso Pires, and Maria Velho da Costa. For the past 30 years, she has dedicated herself to teaching Portuguese as a Foreign Language to Chinese learners and has collaborated with the Embassy of Portugal in Beijing as well as the Consulate-General of Portugal in Shanghai in organizing cultural activities aimed at disseminating the Portuguese language and culture in China. These initiatives include the launch of Portuguese authors’ translations in various bookstores in Shanghai, “Portugal Week” at the SISU Bookstore, among others.
