Profile

Mathematician, José Francisco Rodrigues (Lisbon, 1956) graduated from the University of Lisbon in 1978 and 1982, where he has been a Full Professor since 1994, studied at the Universities of Paris and Bonn and has developed intense international scientific activity. He is the author of one book, editor or co-editor of twenty books and author or co-author of over one hundred and thirty research articles. He was awarded the Artur Malheiro Prize by the Academy of Sciences (1986) and the Gulbenkian Prize for Basic Sciences (2004).

He has been the coordinator of various national and international projects, including the European Science Foundation’s Scientific Programme Mathematical Treatment of Free Boundary Problems(1993-1997), which in 1999 gave rise to the journal Interfaces and Free Boundaries, now published by the European Mathematical Society. He has co-organised more than thirty-five conferences and meetings on Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Mathematics, including topics related to History, Education, Communication, Music, Architecture and Literature. He has been active in public awareness of mathematics, through articles and exhibitions, including Formas & Fórmulas (2012-2016), at the National Museum of Natural History and Science , and Tipografia Matemática Portuguesa: 1496-1987, in Leiria, in 2021.

He was Director of the Centro de Matemática e Aplicações Fundamentais (1989-1994 and 1998-2002), which he has been a member of for over forty years, Director of the Centro Internacional de Matemática (2008-2011 and 2016-2020) and Chairman of the Mathematics Department of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (2014-2017), whose Conselho de Escola he has been a member of since 2022. He was the Portuguese delegate to the foundation of the European Mathematical Society (1990) and to several of its meetings, having collaborated with several of its committees. He was President of the National Mathematics Commission (2002-2010) and the Portuguese delegate to several meetings of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). A member of several scientific panels, he has been a member of the Conseil d’administration of the Institut Henri Poincaré, Paris, since 2021. He was the Secretary of the Class of Sciences and the Vice-Secretary General of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences in 2022-2024 and he is its President in the biennium 2025-2026.
