José Joaquim de Sousa Pereira Osório, Retired Full Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, was born in 1938. In 1959 he completed his degree in Mathematical Sciences, having been hired successively as Assistant, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Full Professor. From 1961 to 1964 he completed mandatory military service, maintaining his faculty teaching activity. He attended the Space Physics and Space Dynamics courses at University College London. He was awarded a research prize by the Institute of High Culture. After several courses and internships in foreign Universities and Astronomical Observatories, he completed his PhD (1975) and Aggregation (1978). He has taught different subjects in the areas of Mathematics and Earth and Space Sciences.
He was Coordinator of the Degree in Geographic Engineering and participated in the creation of the Masters in Geographic Engineering and in Positioning and Satellite Navigation. He was President of the Observatory’s Board of Directors and Coordinator of the respective Research Centre. Cumulatively, he was Director of the Department of Geographical Engineering at the Institute for Tropical Scientific Research, in Lisbon. At the invitation of the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil, he gave a series of lectures for PhD students in Curitiba.
He was Principal Investigator in several scientific projects funded in different national and international programs. In some of these projects, satellite observations and their various applications were carried out for the first time in the national territory.
He was a member of several scientific bodies, in some of them as a representative of Portugal. He organized or had responsibilities in the organization of scientific meetings in Portugal. He is the author and co-author of more than 140 publications and communications. He was a reviewer of national and international books and articles and translator of a book published by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He was a collaborator of the two editions of VERBO Luso-Brazilian Encyclopedia of Culture.
He was elected Corresponding Member in 2005 and Effective Member in 2013. He was a representative of the Academy in a Working Group for Space of the Association of European Academies EASAC. The Report, European Space Exploration, was prepared for the ESA Ministerial Meeting in December 2014.
He is an Auditor of the National Defense Courses (CDN91).
