Profile

Born in 1937 at Porto, Portugal.
Graduated (1965), PhD (1955) and DSc (1977) in Geology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto, Portugal.
Presently (since 2004) Professor and Head of Research, University Fernando Pessoa, Porto, Portugal. Previously (since 1979) Professor, Head of Department and Research, Department of Geology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto, Portugal.
With over 50-year career, his main fields of expertise are organic petrology and geochemistry (coal, oil and natural gas), and Carboniferous stratigraphy and palaeobotany. Participated in 8 research projects and organized 10 international congresses and meetings in the domains of expertise.
Supervised 16 PhD thesis.
Portuguese delegate in diverse European Union bodies, ECE.UN (Geneva), and ISO TC27 – fossil mineral fuels.
Member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon since 2000, full member since 2014, vice-president of the Sciences Class in the period 2016-2021. Member of the Institute of Lexicology and Lexicography since 2013.
Foreign corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Madrid, since 1987.
Full member of the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology-ICCP (1971-2004), honorary member (2005) and ICCP president (1995-1999). Reinhard Thiessen Medal Award (2001).
Author or co-author of numerous book, book chapters, papers and other publications on a wide variety of topics on Organic Petrology and Geochemistry, and Carboniferous stratigraphy and palaeobotany.
