Professor Sobrinho-Simões is Director of the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP) since its creation in 1989 and Emeritus Professor of Pathology of Porto Medical Faculty. Dr. Sobrinho-Simões completed his medical education and the Ph.D degree in Pathology at the Medical Faculty of University of Porto. Upon completing his post-graduate training and research in Cancer Institute/Oslo University, he rose to the rank of full Professor and Chair of the department from 1988. His main interests are oncobiology and thyroid cancer and he has co-authored about 430 articles which have given rise to about 19000 citations (h factor >71). He was President of the European Society of Pathology from 1999 to 2001, after having been Secretary from 1989 to 1997.He helped creating EUROCELLPATH and European School of Pathology, and has been co-organizing Courses on Thyroid Pathology in Europe, South America, Asia and USA since 1992. MSS has co-authored many chapters of four editions (1988, 2006, 2017 and 2023) of the WHO Book on Endocrine Tumours. Dr. Sobrinho-Simões is the recipient of multiple national and international awards including the Prémio Pessoa, Grande Prémio Nacional Ciência Viva, Gago Award and Rio Hortega prize. He has been elected by his peers “The most influent pathologist” in a survey conducted in 2015 by “The Pathologist”.
