Profile

Maria Manuela CHAVES is Professor Emeritus at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, University of Lisbon (Full Professor since 1995). She was scientific coordinator of the Molecular Ecophysiology of Plants Laboratory at the Institute of Chemical and Biological Technology (ITQB) of the New University of Lisbon, Oeiras, for 15 years (2001 to 2016).

She has her scientific interests in plant ecophysiology, namely the study of plant/crop response and adaptation to stressful environments, from the leaf to the molecular level. She is Emeritus Professor of Plant Physiology, Faculty of Agronomy, University of Lisbon and was leader of the Plant Molecular Ecophysiology Laboratory, ITQB, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Oeiras for 15 years. Coordinated the Portuguese participation in ten EU funded research projects. Was first Chair of the Portuguese Committee for the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (1999-2002), member of the Advisory Committee for Global Change on the 6th EU Framework Programme and member of the Inter Academy Council study panel on ‘Science and Technology for Improving Agriculture Productivity and Food Security in Africa’ (2002-2004)

Is fellow of the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa since 2001 and of the Academie Française D’Agriculture since 2019. Received the Medal of Scientific Merit 2017 given by the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Technology and was included in the publication ‘Women in Science 2017’ by the Ciência Viva programme http://www.cienciaviva.pt/mulheresnaciencia/. She was awarded with the prize Annals of Botany (UK/Australia). Published over 120 papers in JCR journals and 21 chapters in multi-authors books. Is co-editor of the books « The Biochemistry of the Grape Berry», by H Gerós, M M Chaves and S Delrot. Bentham Science Publ. 2012 and of «Grapevine in a changing environment – a molecular and ecophysiological perspective» by H Gerós, M M Chaves, H Medrano Gil and S Delrot, Wiley Blackwell 2016. Was invited for various national and international conferences and evaluations of Institutions.
