Holds a PhD in Portuguese Linguistics (1988).
He is a retired Full Professor at the University of Aveiro and has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Paris IV (Sorbonne), the University of Santiago de Compostela, and the University of Coruña. Additionally, he served as a “Chargé de conférences” at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris. He has also taught at the Portuguese Catholic University and delivered Portuguese linguistics courses under the Erasmus Programme at the universities of Hamburg, Liège, and Cáceres. Furthermore, he taught courses for foreign students at the University of Coimbra.
In 2001, he directed a Summer Course in Arrábida on “Portuguese Lexicography, Heritage, and Renewal,” featuring the participation of leading editors and authors of Portuguese, Brazilian, and Galician dictionaries.
He planned and coordinated the Portuguese Lexicographic Corpus Project, available online since 2006, providing open-access texts of Portuguese dictionaries from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, along with an interactive concordance tool for researching lexical units. This project is supported by the DICIweb information system, developed in collaboration with the Department of Electronics at the University of Aveiro.
He participated in the development of the Updated Orthographic Vocabulary of the Portuguese Language (VOALP), published by the Lisbon Academy of Sciences in 2012. He also served as President of the International Institute of the Portuguese Language (ILLP) from 2018 to 2022.
His research contributions extend to the Interuniversity Centre for Camões Studies, particularly in the publication of a Concordance of the Complete Works of Luís de Camões.
His academic and scientific career has been dedicated to the study of language sciences, the analysis of Portuguese manuscript and printed textual heritage (both ancient and modern), and its pedagogical and cultural renewal. In 2021, he was elected a Member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
He is the author of an extensive body of published work, with a particular focus on linguistic reflection, the history and description of the Portuguese language, the recovery of lexical memory, the recognition of lexicographical production, and the enhancement of linguistic and literary heritage—a key aspect in the defence, proper use, and promotion of the Portuguese language.
